Guide: What to wear to Beach Hop

27 Mar
Beach Hop ( The Hop) runs from the 28th March to the 1st of April in Whangamata ( fung – ar -ma- tar), so you have a few days to plan your fabulous outfits for and a few events to attend. The scene is a mixed group of rock’n’rollers, hot rod enthusiasts, rockabilly, physchobilly and the general public so it it is certainly a a colourful time to people watch and take in all the styles.

The weather is a mixed bag each year and Whangamata is a beach town so come repaired for this. This year we have been promised a lovely high! So sunblock and a hat is a must, for those of us showcasing our beautiful hair then a parasol will be the perfect accessory. Don’t forget to pack your vintage swimsuit for those promenades down the beach

There are a variety of cruises throughout the event to beaches or through town, so pack something to protect you from the sun and a light cardigan or bolero. Cute dresses prove popular, capri’s with a cute top matched with wedges or ballet flats offer comfort while driving.

There are markets to stroll through, the Retro Fashion show and Beach Hop Idol to attend so these are perfect events to dress up in your best pieces and show your amazing style. Some of the events are across town so pack some cute flats in your bag to pop on for these walks before switching to your heels and wedges.

This year shows the introduction of the Miss Tattoo comp and Bombshell Burlesque Comp, these are Saturday night events and of course a perfect excuse to dress up before hitting the town to watch the live bands.

Town gets very busy, make sure you grab your water bottle at the beginning of the day to keep hydrated in the heat and a little pack of baby wipes goes along way on the day when wanting to freshen up.

Look book : Red Valentino

One of my friends just emailed me the look book from Red Valentino and I had to share! Very sweet details and choice of fabrics. Red Valentino describes this as a contemporary fairytale, which is made apparent through their use of the over exposed fairy tale back ground. Check out their site, there is some stunning pieces.

The " New Vintage": Bold frills and Bettie Bangs!

2 Mar
Photographer: Zoe Estelle, Wellington

Say hello to the gorgeous Miss Aimee Munch, our Friday New Vintage feature
I’m 32 and live in Wellington but the truth is I’m from Oamaru.

I bought my first op shop purchase when I was 10, it was a stunning over sized 1980’s sweat shirt in faded fluro shades of green, yellow and orange-yummy!

I’ve left the 80’s behind and these days wear 1950s & 60’s clothes both vintage and re-pro, as a bigger girl I can’t always get the real thing but I aint going to complain as re-pro’s can just be chucked in the washing machine! I’m a bit hopeless when it come’s to doing my hair but I make up for it in shoes (200+ pairs), I love finding clothing bargains but never pinch the pennies when it comes to skin care, make-up or bra’s
After 15 years working as a Chef I’ve finally put down my knives and reverted to my original career aspirations , I’m currently studying fashion, this year is pattern drafting which is pretty fabulous. I’ve started my own business (vamporium.co.nz) Currently I’m specialising in 1950’s style petticoats but am working on lingerie and clothing, my main aim is to re-make the vintage items that are too hard to find any more and in modern sizes. I’d love to have my own shop and one day be an era specific costumier for film & tv but I’m quite happy taking it slow at the moment-I just sent my first petticoat to Switzerland-yay!
I’m having a work room sale this Sunday during the Newtown Fair (Wellington) so pop in and say hi, 19 Newtown Ave, 11 am untill 3pm

Outfitted for the forest

22 Feb
Shock!!! a outfit post! of myself!! Todays outfit is perfect for doing risk assessment on forest kindergarten sites in our region, so …perfect for stomping around the bush followed by contract talks at a local eatery.
The boots: Doc Martins, Shirt: Shantons, Blazer – French vintage and the skinnys are from Just Jeans ( P.s top button undone beacuse I cant do it up ;p) An open confession of too much pies, coke and wine!
Smile women!!! I will get the hang of this!
In other news, Betty and Elvis have migrated into new diggs, where hopefully their newley planted companions will flourish and provide them with flowery goodness.

Be Pin Up Perfect get the perfect eyebrow – part 1 SHAPING

5 Apr

Eyebrows are a must ladies…

Whether you are a Bettie, a Dita, Rockin chick, you have the perfect look mastered – your repertoire of pin up perfection MUST include your brows. I see lots of hot gals, looking pretty as a pin up, but sometimes the eyebrow let her down.
With beautifully shaped eyebrows with a nice arch are an important part of a polished look. Fabulous eyebrow shaping calls attention to your eyes, frames them, and makes them appear more open and enhances your look.

Here are some tips to master the shape of the brow. This is a must. I was a monthly waxer – no more, I will go to the expert once a month just to get a shape check, then I will tweeze away to my hearts content!
Gwen Stefani rocks her brows always!
Tools of the trade:

  • Cotton pad
  • Toner/witch hazel to sooth the brow
  • Tweezers – invest in a good pair of tweezer
  • Brow brush or you can use a toothbrush
  • Eye brow wax or hairspray
Ok, start slowly, get a plan in place, use your makeup brushes to get a sense of the lines an where they are on your own eye to eyebrow, pluck one or two hairs at a time, go from one brow to the other to keep things even.
Just start out plucking a few hairs a day, as hasty plucking can leave you with that ‘surprised’ look for a few weeks!

Remember – the easiest mistake to make is to over pluck! Start slowly but surely.
Eyebrows should have an arch, however this doesn’t often happen naturally.
A -The perfect brow starts on the inside corner of your eye (the tear duct area) Hold a pencil or your brush vertically against the side of your nose, notice where it meets your brow – this is where the brow begins.
B – In a ideal perfect “pin up world” the arch happens over the iris, the colored part of your eye. It should be gentle. Hold a pencil or brush against your nostril and move it diagonally out across your iris – this is the best place for the arch tweeze a few hairs at a time from A to B tapering the line slightly thinner toward the peak of the arch – this will start to create a great shape for your brow.

C – they finish at the outside corner, above your eyelashes. With the pencil or brush against your nostril extend it across to the outer corner of your eye – this will guide you to the best place for the brow to end, if you tweeze from B to C tapering the line thinner.

Make an eyebrow plan!

As mentioned above if you are planning to re-shape your arch yourself, have good tweezers and a plan in front of you with the shape for your brows.
Tip; plucking eyebrows in the direction of growth ever, and the skin between thumb and forefinger, stretch it. ALWAYS tweeze in the same direction as the hair grows.

Toothbrush Those Brows

If you are having trouble taming those brows, here is another little trick. Take a toothbrush and spray with a little hair spray and then brush on brows. The stickiness of the hair spray will help keep them in place.

Te Rapa Christmas Races ” Fashion in the Field
Bespoke Hat – Miss Amy Jensen Leen Millinery
Dress: Bettie Page Clothing available at Rita Sue
Shoes: Farmers
Necklace : Gift from a friend
Gloves : Amy Jensen Leen
We had a fabulous time at the TeRapa Races, entering the “Fashion in the Field” event, unfortunately we didn’ t place but it was wonderful to sip champagne whilst watching  everyone dressed up for the day. My only critique of the day is that with all the well dressed gentleman about there was no male category for the men to enter in the “Fashion in the Field”. This category is generally available at most events so it was a shame just to leave it to the lady’s.
On an extra bonus Amy, Michelle, Simon and I made it into the regional paper complete with ” Ballroom pose”I love how gorgeous the couple look in the left hand hand side of the pic.

Cycle Chic

1 Jul

I adore cycling, I adore the rush of going down the hill after work, weaving back in forth like a child, my little  cane basket nestled on the front, my floral helmet, making my way through traffic faster and not paying for petrol. I adore not so much rainy/ windy days when cycling becomes a chore, people who cut me off in their cars , people who scowl when I ride my bike on the footpath because people are cutting me off with their cars and some days helmets when I’m having a fab hair day.

Unfortunately my basket is sitting forlornly on the bench in the garage as I had to send lovely bicycle back to my friend who kindly lent hers to me, BUT I have big plans for the next bicycle who does make her way into my home. She shall be adorned with red paint and accessorised with white mudguards, topped with her basket and shiny round bell and she shall answer to the name Molly……………..doesnt she sound lovely!
Do you have a bicycle?
Does your cycle bring you joy?
Do you find your neighbourhood supportive of cyclists?
