Vintage networks

21 May

Put your hands up if you follow vintage lifestyle networks? Me too!, I find them a huge wealth of knowledge and a great way to meet/ network with like minded individuals around the world.  So what better way to share the knowledge than with a directory of all the networks, I will add the networks I follow and you can share yours via the comments.

The Fedora Lounge – The ultimate vintage network! I consistently refer to the topic threads especially the powder room, you will find discussions on hair setting, beauty, clothing … anything relating to vintage in specific eras. Also a great source of info for vintage loving men.

Vintage Network Worldwide – by the creators of the Vintage life magazine. Full of lifestyle/ interest groups and discussions supporting vintage/ pin up lifestyles.

Retro Lifestyle is the new kid  on the block with opportunity’s to share your blog posts and enter into discussions about what vintage/ retro inspires you.

Pin Up Lifestyle – the big sister of Retro lifestyle, showcase your pin up photos/ portfolios and network with models, photographers and suppliers. Plenty of discussions sharing tips and ideas.

Queens Of Vintage  another great forum platform for sharing vintage lovelies.

These are the main sites I frequent or refer to when searching for a specific answer or solution, looking forward to see what networks you follow!

Pleased as punch!

4 May
Well maybe just pleased!, whilst typing the title I wondered where did this phrase come from?

Basically it derives from the Punch and Judy puppet shows originating in  16th century Italy. Punch goes on a rampage killing his baby, wife and many other victims including death whilst being overly ecstatic with his actions ” Pleased as punch!”. No surprise that popularity declined in the late 20th century as it society did not want to find entertainment in a “wife beating serial killer”. Further reading here.
I got a little side tracked with the title, so I’m pleased as I discovered a great link explaining how to remove lenses out of vintage frames. Two years ago you may remember I found these great glasses at an op shop for $2!
They had prescription lenses in them so I took them to the local optometrist who was reluctant to try removing them as he didn’t want to break them. After that I resigned to the fact that they would be purely ornamental and they have been on display since. Tonight I came across Fifties Frames which described step by step on how to remove the lenses from the frames with hot water and it worked!

This is my late at night, no make up happy face!!….Yes I’m in my dressing gown! I’m looking forward to wearing these tomorrow and  hopefully finding some more in the local op shops.

I’m back! I feel like that I have to say that every fortnight at the moment but the truth is I have a crap laptop that likes to put me through the ringer on the frequent bases. The problem this time? Aparently a faulty power cable, a little frustrating due to the laptop not being a year old ………………..ok rant over.

I’m rather excited that my order from Heyday clothing in the U.K has been confirmed. After searching high and low for sailor style pants in New Zealand ( which was a fail) I then turned into an online search where I discovered  Heyday and ordered this style here in plum. The ordering process was also a positve one as Shona the creator of Heyday and a fellow blogger called to follow up on an ordering issue that arose.
Thank you Shona for your great customer service!
I also have some photos coming from a great vintage styling workshop I assisted in last saturday. This was lead by my friend the lovely Michelle from Debonairee Doos who has a wealth of knowledge in vintage hairstyling and make up. It was lovely to meet so many ladies interested in vintage styling.

Autumn wish List

The weather is beginning to cool here in New Zealand so I’ve began my search for lovely knits.
Its seems here at the moment that our stores are only stocking dull colours in greys, deep blues etc, yet I’m lovely jewel colours in greens, blues, reds and pinks.
I love this super sweet Ski Bunny Knit from Australian company Retrospect’d, it is also available in blue and black and would be perfect for layering.
Long red gloves in wool or leather.
Long, warm wool stockings in beautiful colours.
Cloches in beautiful styles and colours
A well cut vintage wool coat.

Starlet Inspiration: Jean Harlow

3 Mar
Harlean Carpenter who later became Jean Harlow, was born in Kansas City (March 3, 1911), .
Also known as the “Platinum Blonde” or the “Blonde Bombshell” due to her striking platinum blonde hair.
Harlow became a superstar at MGM. She was given superior movie roles to show off not only her beauty, but what turned out to be a genuine comedic talent
Tragically Jean’s short life ended age 26 on  June 7, 1937 of uremic poisoning during the filming of Saratoga.

My New Bakelite Baby!

Glee!!!! I’m super excited!!! cant you tell!
My lovely hubby darlin brought home for me an original working Bell Radio in beautiful condition.
Apparently a work colleague had it sitting in a cupboard at home and thought I might like it ( What a darlin).
It was a bargain too, only $50! The empty shells of these fetch for over a $100 on trade me.
Share your wares!, what treasures have you come across this week?
